Day nine of the NSED Academy started normally, this is the students second to last day and they will be graduating tomorrow. During the morning hours till about 10:30 the students had a free hour. During the free hour the students engaged in games and free time to reflect on their time here at the Academy. After their reflection time the students began to prepare for the guest speaker. The students also prepared for afternoon activities which would consist of learning cyber security and a scavenger hunt.
The guest speaker for the morning was Chris Wiegard, Wiegard is a climate change activist and lobbyist. He spoke with the students about climate change and ways to contribute to the planet. Wiegard also talked about John Tyndall who explained that the heat in Earths atmosphere in terms of the capacities of various gases in the air absorb radiant heat and this is known as infrared radiation. Another key point was engineers’ responses to climate change in which they are starting to create inventions to replace fossil fuel energy sources, and improve energy efficiency. Overall the students enjoyed learning about how the climate is changing, and how it definitely should be talked about more.
During the afternoon the students were presented with a scavenger hunt courtesy of Mr. Moore. Various parts of computers were placed on a table and the students were put into three groups it was a race to see who could take the various parts and put the tower back together again. After putting it back together they tested it to make sure that it worked. After testing the computers to make sure they worked properly, Windows 10 was installed on them. Once everything was completed the students took the computers home to keep.
